Google May 2020 Core Algorithm Update: What You Need to Know

Reading Time: 4 mins

Google rolled out a new core update, named the Google May 2020 core update, which began on May 4th 2020.

This took around 2 weeks, and was set to be a big update that would have an impact on the search results quite significantly.

The update finished rolling out on the 18th of May 2020.

This update has been reported as having a very big impact.

You can see that the SERP volatility was deemed very high by the SEMrush tool which tracks and measures search results.

Before this update, the January 2020 core update came out, and before that was the September 2019 core update.

You should be looking at your site analytics to identify whether you have been affected by the update or not. Any drop or rise in organic traffic within the first few weeks in May would indicate that you may have been affected by the new core update.

In terms of what you can do if you have been negatively impacted, not much really. These core updates don’t tend to focus on a specific industry, niche or type of content. Largely, they tend to simply improve Google’s results in order to provide a better service to searchers. And the answer still remains, to ensure you have great content on your site that people want to click and read.
