The combination of design principles, user behaviour, and technology

Website design is a critical aspect of creating a website. It is the visual representation of a website, and it encompasses all aspects of the user experience, including layout,  typography, imagery, and navigation. A well-designed website should be aesthetically pleasing and easy to use, with a clear and intuitive navigation structure that allows users to find the information they are looking for quickly and easily.
Website design also involves creating a responsive design, which means that the website is optimised for viewing on different devices, such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This is important because more and more people are using mobile devices to access the internet. A responsive design ensures that the website will be easily accessible and usable on any device.
Web Design Philosophy

Designing for goals

When it comes to website design there are many options of what to do. But at the end of the day one thing is key, getting the end user to convert. Whether it is to use a service you provide, purchase an item, or simply to engage and contact you, or share your information. The question is how?

It comes down to being able to achieve the best out of a series of terms you may have heard of.

Our Cambridge web design team will work with you to identify your audience’s personas, and then develop a framework and design which will work for your audience. This is a crucial step to ensure you generate a return from your investment in your new web design.

User Experience Design (UXD|UX)

The goal of UX design is to understand the needs, motivations, and behaviours of users, and use that knowledge to create websites that are easy, enjoyable, and effective to use. User-centric design has become increasingly important as technology becomes more and more integrated into our daily lives. With the rise of digital products and services, it is crucial to design solutions that are user-friendly and accessible to a wide range of users, in order to ensure that technology is accessible to everyone.

User Centric Design (UCD)

User-Centric Design is to create websites, that are not only functional and efficient, but also satisfying and enjoyable to use. This is achieved by putting the users at the center of the design process and considering their needs, goals, and perspectives throughout the development process. User Interface Design (UID|UI)

Good UI Design takes into account the needs and goals of the end user, as well as the brand and the business goals of the product. It should create a seamless and intuitive experience for the user, allowing them to easily accomplish their tasks without frustration or confusion. UI design is an important aspect of UX design, as it directly impacts the user's experience of using a product. A well-designed UI can make a product more enjoyable to use, increase its usability, and ultimately contribute to its success. On the other hand, a poorly designed UI can lead to user frustration and decreased satisfaction with the product.

Interaction Designn (IxD)

The goal of interaction design is to create websites that are intuitive, efficient, and satisfying to use. This is achieved by considering the needs and goals of the end user and by designing interactions that are natural and easy to understand. Our Cambridge web designers use a variety of tools and techniques, including prototyping, user testing, and iterative design, to create designs that meet the needs of users and deliver a positive experience. Interaction design is an essential aspect of UX design and is critical to the success of digital products. A well-designed interaction can greatly enhance the user experience, while a poorly designed interaction can lead to confusion, frustration, and decreased satisfaction.

How we design your ideal site

Our web design process

At Xanthos, our focus as a web design agency is building websites that help businesses grow and generate leads. We start by finding out what makes your business so special and pinpointing your company and client personas to inform how the web design is developed.

Design brief meeting

We will have a meeting with you whereby we will go through your thoughts, your ideas, your design constraints, and find out what you need the website to do for you.

So that we can design and build you the best website for your needs, we will research exactly what we need to do, for you.

A wireframe for a website is a visual representation or blueprint that outlines the structure and layout of a webpage or website. It is typically created before any design  work begins, and serves as a guide for designers and developers to understand the basic architecture of the site.

Wireframes are typically created using simple shapes, lines, and text, and do not include any detailed design elements or visual styling. They focus instead on the placement of content, functionality, and navigation elements on the page.

Wireframes can either be low resolution, almost sketch-like, to a higher resolution with more detail.

Wireframe Demo

Once the wireframe has been complete, it can be turned into a usable demo. This can allow for User Experience (UX) testing of the page and its elements, before work begins on the visual design.

Visual Design

Website visual design refers to the overall look and feel of a website, including its aesthetics, layout, and design elements. It encompasses everything from the colour scheme and typography to the graphics and images used on the site.

The visual design of a website plays an important role in creating a positive user experience. It can help to establish a brand identity, convey information more effectively, and guide users through the site. A well-designed website will have a consistent and cohesive visual style that supports the content and functionality of the site.

Visual design can also affect the overall usability of a website. For example the contrast between text and background can impact how easily users can navigate and use the site.

Demo Build

Once we have the visual design, we can move on to the build of the site. This will begin, in most cases, with creating a working demo of a few pages. This will make sure that the build works as the design intended, and allows at an early stage for tweaks to be made.

In the case of WordPress sites the demo can appear higher up this chain, as elements will have already gone through wireframe and design stages, allowing for rapid demo prototyping.
